I received a desperate call from a rescue volunteer for the Central Valley Shelter asking for help to get a small Chihuahua mix that had been a stray and attacked by another dog, from Bakersfield to UC Davis for medical help. Annette and Mark Farabaugh, from Visalia, CA. offered to help transport the little dog from Bakersfield to Rio Vista. Nikolji, a Doxie/Minpin mix was found as a stray in the Bakersfield with puncture wounds to the head and a broken jaw. Nikolaj needed special care for his broken jaw. UC Davis agreed to examine Nikolaj if he could be get there that week. Thanks to Annette and Mark for springing into action on such short notice. They flew him to Rio Vista where RV2 The Rescue arranged to overnight him and then arrange transportation to UC Davis.
After examining Nikolaj, the medical staff said the pin that was temporarily inserted to stabilize the jaw had protruded into the ear canal. They said they were going to take it out whether they got paid or not, because he must have been in terrible pain. He was given a muzzle to help stabilize the jaw while he was healing. Later the muzzle was removed and it appeared that he was able to function well enough and didn’t require an additional surgery. Nikolaj shortly thereafter went to a Big Dog rescue for adoption. Thanks to the staff at UC Davis and the wonderful team of people who volunteered to get Nikolaj the help he needed. |
